Hello, we are coming to korcula in June and we would like to climb the Sv. Ilia mountain.
Could you give us some information on the routes up there and where we could purchase a map
How long would the walk to the summit take
Is there any place to sleep or eat on the mountain
What kind of weather is expected in mid-June Any good views
How dangerous is that area We are not very experianced mountineers and are a little worried.
Thanks in advance
Stephen

Hi Steven, the general info about Sveti Ilija, Peljesac is at this link :
https://www.korculainfo.com/peljesac/svetiilija/
There is also map there, not very detailed though.
Last time I walked there , which was years ago, it took me about 3 hrs. I walked from Orebic/ Ruskovic route.
At the moment, there is no place to eat nor sleep there.
June is warm month, sometimes even too warm to climb. The heath can be dangerous so you should take hat, sunlock, and lot of water. And don’t go on your own- take a friend with you and charge mobile phone batteries before you go, just in case…………… 🙂
maybe this map is large enough for climbing to Sveti Ilija

Also, check Sveti Ilija Blog and Monte Vipera Blog, written by local hikers :

Hi,
I am taking a group of photo enthusiasts in May to Korcula and was wondering how long it takes the hike to Sveti Ilija. We would not have that much time, hence why I need to plan very carefully ahead. Would the 3 hours mentioned above be enough time for the return hiking trip Or 3 hours only for the ascent 🙂
A few other questions:
– Which would be a quickest and/or prettiest route to climb
– Is it an easy hike Considering for all levels of fitness and that we will be carrying photographic equipment
– Is Sveti Ilija the best view point for the region Do you have other locations from where we could take amazing panoramic photos
– Is the trail well indicated Can we go without knowing the way without getting easily lost
Many thanks for your help!
Regards,
Catarina
Hi Catarina,
I'm afraid, it takes 3 hrs one way to reach the summit of Sveti Ilija. It is a whole day trip.
However, if your group is more interested in taking nice photos than to reach summit itself, you can do other routes – for example from Viganj to Orebic via Bilopolje – this route is much easier as it leads along the slopes west to east and offers great views over the channel and Korcula Town with lot of places you can take amazing panoramic photos from.
Have a look at this hiking map
https://www.korculainfo.com/peljesac/svetiilija/sv-ilija-peljesac-map1/
(click on image so you get much larger map which you can print) to see the route and details.
The trails are fairly well marked so it is very unlikely you will get lost if you keep on the path, especially if you stay on the slopes only, not hiking to the summit.
Yes, walking along slopes of Sveti Ilija offer the best view points for Peljesac Channel archipelago.
Other good routes are along Defora bays (south side of the Island) with a views over to Lastovo and Mljet – see some info here:

In my opinion, Viganj to Orebic via Bilopolje is the best option – see photos and info about this route here:
