Martinovo Lito – Klapa Singing Festival in Korcula

The traditional Klapa Singing Festival Martinovo Lito’ will be held again this year in Korcula.

Festival will take place on Saturday, 13th of November 2010 at 8 pm in Dom Kulture, Korcula.

The festival will include following klapa singers :

Klapa SUFIT from Split, Klapa KUMPANJI from Blato, Klapa TIRAMOL from Korcula, Klapa DINGAC from Peljesac, Klapa ARMORIN from Zagreb, Klapa NAVA from Orebic and Klapa PUNTARI from Omis.

The tradition of Klapa singing evolved since 19th century in Dalmatia as well as in Korcula. It’s main characteristic is harmonic multi tonal homophone singing, mostly love songs and stories about life of fishermen and sailors. The name klapa’ probably evolved from some version of regional Italian language, where word clapa’ means group of friends.
