Last night residents of Korcula lit candles in centre of the town to honor the memory of the civilians and soldiers killed by JNA and Serb paramilitary forces in Vukovar in 1991. The Croatian parliament has proclaimed 18 November Vukovar Remembrance Day to commemorate the day when the city’s defence lines were broken after a three-month siege in 1991.
During the siege, 1624 people were killed, including 12 children, and 1219 were wounded, including 30 children. More than 7000 Croatian soldiers and civilians were captured and taken to Serb-run concentration camps, and around 22000 Croats and other non-Serbs were expelled from the city. Around 350 Croatian soldiers and civilians from the Vukovar area, who went missing during the war in Croatia, remain unaccounted for. (Photos by Branka B)
