Badija: The Cloister of the Franciscan Monastery
Above photo: The Cloister of the Franciscan Monastery on Badija
The impressive 14th century Gothic-Renaissance cloister, adjacent to Church and Monastery from the North side (see the monastery plan), consists of four rows of stylish single and double-pillared columns enclosing the tranquil inner courtyard of the Monastery. In the middle of the courtyard, on the platform, there is an attractive water well. In the form of a quadrangle the arcade is running along the four walls of Church and Monastery.
This cloister, finished in 15th century is considered as one of the finest features of Korcula’s architecture of that times.
Beside the similar one in Dubrovnik (also Franciscans) the cloister is also considered as one of the most beautiful structures of that kind in Dalmatia.
