Excerpts from some travelogues where Korcula is mentioned:
Francis
Tapon : September 17 - Cavorting in Croatia:
"I really want the Venetians to invade and take over
America. Just think, we would finally have some really beautiful
cities in the USA. And some good pizza and pasta too. The
Venetian Empire spread down the Croatian Coast. I just wish
they had spread all the way to America, because they just
did a fabulous job with whatever city they touched...
I MEET MY MATCH IN KORCULA : Korcula is pronounced "Core-chu-la".
Marco Polo, the ultimate world traveler, made this trip I
am on look like a daily commute for him. He started his trip
across Asia from his little house in Korcula. It's still there,
although not in great shape. Polo's journey through Asia lasted
24 years. He reached further than any of his predecessors,
beyond Mongolia to China. He became a confidant of Kublai
Khan (1214-1294). He traveled the whole of China and returned
to tell the tale, which became the greatest travelogue.
Although the temps were warm, the citizens told
me that it gets quite windy and cold in the winter, although
it never snows. So the smart Venetians built a high wall around
Korcula to block the wind and made tight convoluted little
streets to also deter the wind. It makes for a delightful
city...." http://www.francistapon.com/europe/croatia.htm
Korcula
Island, Croatia TravelPod Travelogue :
" ... Our vigorous regime of sunbathing,
swimming and twice-daily gelato consumption continued on the
beautiful island of Korcula. We were sad to bid goodbye to
Dubrovnik after having a few wonderful days there, but promised
that we would have a 'Slatka-Leipa-Luda' reunion again one
day in Old Town....We switched from holiday mode down to total
idleness for a few days. Korcula itself has a tiny population
of three thousand and has a village feel to the town. Lots
of cafe-bars, a few restaurants and lots of alleyways that
hide galleries and small shops. The town is situated on a
hill and a maze of stairs and lanes climb up and down the
hill. Each home seems to have a window box of pink and red
geraniums. Laundry is strung above the lanewways. Everyone
takes it slowly here. People sit in cafes to escape the heat
and nuns sit in the shady square in front of the church. Most
restaurants overlook the water and there is an amazing cocktail
bar that has been converted from a tower and has a view of
the town from the top...." http://states-of-art.travelpod.com/cgi-bin/view_printer.pl?tweb_UID=catmoj&tweb_tripID=v2v&tweb_guest_password=
The
Global Village Croatia Gio's Travelogue:
"... During our stay, we visit two islands:
Korcula and Mljet. Korcula, just 20 minutes of ferry from
Orebic, has a very nice old town surrounded by walls, like
Dubrovnik. We visit the whole island, from Korcula town to
Vela Luka on the opposite side, then I can't resist entering
an Internet Cafe to read what some weird people are writing
in a certain forum.... " http://gvcommunity.tripod.com/village/giocroatia/giocroatia.htm
Ally's
Trip - The Balkan Bash Travelogue:
" ...I wish I knew more about Croatia
before I arrived here today: more about its war torn history,
about its language, or even how to find it on a map. I’m
wishing all these things now because I’m about to be
beaten to death by an enraged Croatian man I’ve never
seen before—a heaving, refrigerator-sized Rambo of a
man—and I have absolutely no idea why. ... Atop an ancient
tower on the stone walls of Korcula Island, for instance,
we discover a trendy bar serving sophisticated cocktails using
ropes and pulleys to haul the drinks up...." http://www.allystrip.com/articleView.html?article_id=55
