DUBROVNIK Accommodations
Hotels in Dubrovnik
Finding decent accommodations within the walls of Old Town, the part of Dubrovnik that dates from the seventh century, can be a challenge.
Excelsior Hotel
Following the war the Excelsior was unrivalled as the city’s leading luxury hotel. Now with a flurry of challengers it has raised its game and the views are still stunning.

Puciæ Palace
The only luxury hotel in the old city may have a
reputation for arrogance, but the 19 idiosyncratic
rooms are beautifully done and themed around various
Croatian luminaries.

Hotel Palace
A 45 million euro refurbishment has brought this
large hotel bang up to international five star business
standards with high-tech meetings rooms, break out
rooms et al, as well as the Wren’s Club Spa
with its hot stone therapy massages.

Karmen Apartments
Arguably the best location in the city; these four
excellent value apartments, run by the colourful
Marc van Bloemen, are right in the old city on the
harbour. Apartment one has the best views.

Kompas
Rumours persist of a major refurbishment to bring
it up a few stars, but for now this simple hotel
overlooking the beach at Uvala Bay is a reasonably
priced option.
Try the Pucic Palace (385-020-326-222;
$600), a three-year-old, five-star actual Renaissance
palace-cum-hotel that overlooks the lively market
square, or the friendly, family-run Karmen Apartments
(385-020-323-433 or apartments@karmendu.tk;).
Accommodation in the Old Town is limited to the
stellar Pucic Palace (Ul.od Puca 1, 326 222, www.the
pucicpalace.com, €330-€585), where the
modest front door belies the classy interior of
a former nobleman’s home. As with much of
Dubrovnik, prices nearly double in summer. On the
rise of Frana Supila, past Ploce Gate, are two high-class
tourist hotels: the Excelsior (No.12, 353 353, www.gva.hr,
€131-€269) and the Grand Villa Argentina
(No.14, 440 555, www.hoteli-argentina.hr, €174-€300).
The rates vary wildly in both, according to summer
tariffs and sea views. The new five-star Hilton
Imperial (Marijana Blazica 2, 320 320, www.hilton.com,
€125-€290) has attractive off-season rates
and the renovated Hotel Bellevue (Pera Cingrije
7, 413 306, www.hotel-bellevue.hr, €65-€174)
offers mid-range comfort on the city’s western
side.
Further west, Lapad provides cheaper, purpose-built
package hotels by the beach – the Kompas (Setaliste
Kralja Zvonimira 56, 352 000, www.hotel-kompas.hr,
€80-€144) is gleaming after a complete
overhaul. Budget travellers can visit Atlas Travel
(Cira Carica 3, 442 222, www.atlas-croatia.com)
for private lodgings. ( timeout.com)
