01.09 - 30.9.2007 - A re-enactment of Marco Polo's historic battle of September 7, 1298 :
Summary: One of the greatest naval battles of the Middle Ages took place in the waters of Korèula, off Cape Ražnjiæ in present day Lumbarda. The Genoese fleet consisted of 85 warships, while the Venetian fleet was the greatest war flotilla the Venetians had ever put to sea: 96 galleys and three big ships. The battle began in the early morning of Sunday, September 7, and lasted to the afternoon. The day was already waning when sixteen Genovese galleys appeared, sailing from the direction of Mljet. The readily joined the battle attacking the Venetians weary eastern flank. All of the Venetian ships were either captured or destroyed, including the great Admiral Dandolo's ship. The Venetian losses were unprecedented: 18 galleys sunk, 66 galleys captured, 7,000 soldiers, sailors and rowers dead, and 7,400 captured. The Polo galley was also destroyed – a great ship with 120 oars. Marco Polo himself was captured, and his bravery described as follows: "captured because he threw himself with his galley into the front lines of the battle and because he fought for his homeland bravely and with great courage and was taken to Genoa wounded and in shackles".
Marco Polo found himself in a Genoese prison and there began dictating the memories of his grand journey through China to Rustichello, an enterprising writer of chivalrous novels from Pisa. If it was not for the battle in the waters of Korèula perhaps the turbulent and stunning biography of Marco Polo would have remained unknown, and the master work of adventure and travel literature known as "Il Milione" remained unwritten!
