Rare Fish Found in Korcula Waters
The latest news from Korcula’s cafes is that Jola i Mikica Lipanovic, fishermans couple from Lumbarda, with its large, 50 m long net, have cought in the waters south of the island, one very rare fish.
The fish was pink coloured with silver mark on it’s body and it had a large teeths! Locals were quite amused by it when it arrived on local fish market in the early hours of yesterday’s morning. Nobody new which type of fish is that, so to avoid further ‘ fishing stories’ they had to consult local experts - Damir - the biologist and Sergie - the Vet.
Damir and Sergije came to the conslusion that this fish, Xyrichthys navacula, is indeed very rarly seen in Adriatic sea, as its habitat is in East Atlantic, off the coasts of Portugal and Afica. They are saying this is already second fish of the same sort cought in Korcula waters. The first one was cought couple years ago by (surprised) italian tourist!
In Croatian, this fish is officialy called “sarko crveni”. The name was given to it years ago by late Korcula’s biologist and my grammar school headteacher, Dr. Ivo Onofri
