On the 5th May Residents of Korcula Old Town held a protest against the town authorities, in front of Korcula Town Hall. They believe that the Korcula Town Authorities grant too many permissions for occupation of pavements and streets of Old Town to local restaurants (and other business owners) with their tables and chairs for al fresco eating. There was also petition to sign for supporters.
Residents of Korcula Old Town would like to be involved in the decision making about how public spaces in the Old Town are used. They don’t want all public places to become rented out to restaurant and business owners as it disturbs the normal way of life in Korcula Old Town that was built 700 years ago for people to live in. Now it is made into an unberable place for anybody who is not a tourist.Children who used to play at Old Town’s streets are no longer allowed in certain spots in the town as they, whith their games, ‘disturb’ business.
The Old Town of Korcula is a place to live, not only a tourist attraction. If local authorities don’t start to think about this issue, the town itself will become too difficult to live in and will slowly disintergrate into just another Disneyland.
