Fog in Korcula

Fog on Island of Korcula

If I tell you this image is taken today by friend of mine on the Island of Korcula, would you belive me?

The weather looks awful, and I am so happy to stay indoors, with my slippers on, sitting next to my stove and listening to some good radio program ( bbc radio 4 is my favorite).

No any holidaying , beach life , eating al fresco or similar.

Just pure winter :-)

And I love it !

New Harbour Authority in Korcula

Korcula Harbour in Summer 2006 traffic jam :-(
Finally, it seems that soon, Korcula Town is going to get its own harbour authority instead of one that is currently run and managed by regional head office.

From the beginning of the last century, Korcula is the traditional stopover destination for numerous larger and smaller cruising ships that are sailing up and down the Adriatic from Venice via Croatian Coast further down towards Greece and Mediterranean Sea. That makes Korcula and its harbour very often, especially during the summer season, crowded and jammed by thousands of people embarking from cruisers and doing their sightseeing in Korcula Old Town. Also, sometimes, these cruisers and noise that is coming from their engines, are making life miserable for residents that lives in near vicinity of the harbour.

According to current legislations, all decisions about Korcula harbour are made by regional government bodies, which make locals very annoyed as we have no any control over it.

As we will soon get this under our control (hopefully) , we will be able to decide for ourselves how many cruisers are allowed to stop in Korcula, where they are going to anchor during that stop over, how are tourists being transferred to the Old Town, at what times etc

Furthermore, new Korcula Harbour Authority will make plans for construction of completely new harbour that will serve large ships (at the location somewhere out of town) so only small boats and schooners will be allowed to anchor at Korcula Old Town’s harbour.

This will eventually, when ready, allow for Korcula Town to become completely car-free zone which most of residents are dreaming about.

New Photos of Old Korcula

It is November, weather is cold, heating is on, and it’s ideal time to do some additional work on the website.
I started with sorting out some old photo material that is waiting to be placed at our ” Old Photos” section of the site.
Going through the photos I have waiting on my hard disk, I found this lovely old photo of Sveti Nikola (my street)
and got surprised how much it actually changed since then :

Sveti Nikola Shipyards

It is hardly possible to recognise the street - there are no any houses in Cvjetno Naselje, so the top of the hill above Sveti Nikola street is almost bare ( no any trees eaither). These wooden houses ( and stone one ) in the first row are gone by now too. They used to be small ( and larger ) shipbuilders workshops that were dotted all along the sea shore. Nowadays, there is hardly any wooden boat left there, nonetheless some shipbuilder or workshop. That’s quite sad in the way - I tried not to be too nostalgic about past times, but in this case, I can’t help it. It would be nice to see at least one or two left…

Island of Lastovo and its Archipelago new Croatian Nature park

In September 2006, Island of Lastovo and its Archipelago became the Croatian Nature Park, when the Croatian government passed the Act on Designating the Lastovo Archipelago Nature Park.

The new Nature Park is called Lastovsko Otocje (meaning Lastovo Archipelago)

It covers an area of almost 200 km2 of which the mainland area accounts for 53 km2 and the marine area for 143 km2.
The Nature Park contains all 44 islands, small islands, cliffs and reefs belonging to the Lastovo municipality, with the biggest being Lastovo and Sušac.

This area is one of the most preserved marine areas in the Adriatic. Due to its values and characteristics it represents a vast natural and partly cultivated area of land and the sea showing ecological features of international and national importance, as well as pronounced landscape, educational, cultural, historical, tourist and recreational values.

The protection provided is intended to preserve the inherited landscape and cultural values and biological and landscape diversity including the appertaining sea and the submarine area.

Within six months upon the coming into effect of this Act the Government of the Republic of Croatia will by a regulation establish a public institution for the management of the Lastovo Archipelago Nature Park.

Bad Weather in Korcula

After weeks of warm and sunny weather, Saturday and Sunday in Korcula were rainy and windy.

We had heavy rain at Saturday, which brought us, according to Korculan Meteorological Station, about 185 litars of rain per square meter.

Since records begins, this is the highest measured rainfall in Korcula .

This graph, produced by Korcula Weather Station of www.korcula.net website, shows the rainfall in Korcula on 16.09.06:

Broken Graphicon

As you can see on the graph, the rainfall was so high that it went off the graph.

This bad weather brough a lot of trouble to boats and crops as well as to local shops .

As shops are all located at the ground floors many were flooded .

This image, taken by Nenad Kosovic, shows Korcula’s firefighters helping to drain water from the local shop:

The same problems arised in Orebic and other places at Peljesac Peninsula and along Korcula’s archipelago.
