Peljesac Bridge Construction Plans

Peljesac Bridge - Most Peljesac
According to Jutarnji List, a Croatian daily newspaper, the architectural construction plans for Peljesac Bridge, the future second largest bridge in Europe, were last week completed by The Institute for the Bridges of Zagreb Faculty of Civil Engineering.

In accordance with the latest agreement between Croatia and Bosnia, the bridge will be a suspension and girder bridge that is 55 meters high above the sea surface.

The bridge will be 2300 metres long, supported with 10 pillars, each built at 180 metres apart.

Two middle pillars, with a height of 170 metres and a span of 568 meters, will be supporting the bridge with steel poles.

To keep the whole structure in proportion, the width of the bridge will be 20 metres , allowing space for 4 driving tracks.

Beside the construction of the bridge, there will be construction of accessing roads at the both sides of the bridge, including 2 tunnels on Peljesac (one 2170 metres and other 450 metres long) as well as two smaller bridges on Peljesac, (one 500 m and another 50 meters long).

The beginning of the construction is expected to start in early summer 2007 and will last 3 to 4 years.

Estimated cost : 200-220 milion euros.

The Peljesac Bridge would be much better off as a Tunnel

Map of Peljesac Bridge

As soon as the Croatian and Bosnian Government have (finnaly?) achieved mutually satisfying agreement about specification of future Peljesac Bridge, there are already negative comments regarding this decision.

According to article published in Slobodna Dalmacija (regional daily newspapers), the construction of the latest version of Peljesac Bridge is going to cost twice as much as original one.

In the article, journalists were talking to prof. dr. sc. Jure Radni?, the head of Bridge and Concrete Department of Faculty of Civil Engineering from Split, Croatia who told them that much better and cheaper way to solve the problem of connecting Croatian territories, would be a TUNNEL (!) .

In the article, Prof.Radanic briefly explained his idea, adding that this option will not only cost four times less than “bridge” one, but would also offer enviromentally safer solution for MaloStonski Zaljev (Bay of Mali Ston) , well known for it’s oyster fields which are specific for this unique ecosystem.

Cruiser M/S Monet trapped in Korcula

Monet stucked in Korcula's harbour

The cute little cruising ship M/S Monet is trapped in a Korcula harbour due to bad weather.

The ship is cruising along the Dalmatian Coast with about 20 passengers on the board. It is trapped by bad weather, so it is hanging around Korcula already for few days.

I feel sorry for the passengers  it must be pretty boring hanging around the same place for such a long time stuck at the boat that is constantly rocking from one side to another. Luckily, Korcula old town’s harbour is very good for this weather conditions as it is completely sheltered from Jugo wind but as soon as you sail around the corner, wind is really strong and rocking starts…

I would never recommend to anybody to go cruising along Adriatic in December or any other winter month. You can be lucky and have great and calm weather (very unlikely, though), but what if you end up with week long Jugo weather?
So, go cruising in summers, stay at terrafirma in winters, or as old Dalmatian saying says “hvali more, drz se kraja” ( I will not even try to translate this as it will probably be lost in translation anyway, but using licencia poetica, it means something like ” don’t mess up with sea”)

Update 12.12.06 - Kapetan Roko, of Rokao and Ela Apartments, a friend of mine, just emailed me saying that Mala Lara Catamaran was not sailing on 09.12.06 either, due to bad weather. So the only ship that left Korcula Harbour on that day was Jadrolinija’s Liburnija that bravely continued with it’s journey towards Dubrovnik

New Agreement about Peljesac Bridge

Virtual Bridge at PeljesacAccording to Hina, the Croatian News Agency , governments of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina are close to achieving final agreement about technical specification of future Peljesac Bridge.

Pelje?ac Bridge (Most Pelje?ac - kopno) is going to be 55 meters high, 20 meters wide, with length of about 2300 meters. This kind of specification will allow smooth traffic beneath of bridge and uninterrupted access to Bosnian waters.

The bridge is going to be fixed / not bascule :-(/ as stated earlier , with 4 traffic tracks, two for each direction.

So now, instead of 35m high bridge, we are getting 55 meters one - no any info yet about additional costs :-)

The works are expected to start during summer 2007.
