Korcula Harbour and mooring for small, local boats

I received recently email from Jason who lives in Kuciste (Peljesac Peninsula) in which he expressed his concerns and suggestions about mooring places for small, local boats that visit Korcula for few hours per day. This is his email:

Hi, I really enjoy your blog and keeping up with local developments in and around Korcula. Regarding the new Harbour authority and mooring for large cruise ships, I was wondering whether there are any plans to improve access for small boats visiting Korcula? We have a 5 metre ‘pasara’ over in Kuciste and one of our favourite trips is to pop over to Korcula for shopping, lunch or just for an ice cream and a stroll. There is usually plenty of room to tie up on the East side of Korcula but weather conditions can be unpredictable there and you cannot leave your boat for long in case the wind changes. You can easily tie up in completely calm conditions, go for lunch and return a few hours later to find a choppy sea and your boat being bashed against the harbour walls. The West harbour is much more sheltered, and the section reserved for water taxis can be used by the public in the winter as there are no taxis using the space. In the summer this is impossible and there is nowhere else to tie up unless you are prepared to pay 30 euro per day to use the ACI marina facilities.
If Korcula Municipality provided a safe area for small boats to tie up in the West harbour it could be operated and charged like public parking and would encourage people to use boats rather than cars to visit the old town. What do you think?

I share Jason’s opinion and consider it as a very good point which he made about mooring spaces for small boats which is lacking in Korcula.

Perhaps Korcula’s Harbour Authority would take into consideration needs of people like Jason and make some adjustments in their future plans for West part of the Harbour…
