Klapa Singing Festival in Korcula
If you happened to be in Korcula next week, don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy ‘Martinovo Lito’, the traditional Klapa Singing Festival that goes on at this time of the year in Korcula.
The festival will be held on 12th and 13th of November, 2009 and will include following klapa singers :
Klapa Tiramol (Korčula), Klapa Ragusa Vecchia (Cavtat), KlapaArdura (Split), Klapa Kumpanji (Blato), Klapa Tragos (Trogir), Klapa Versi (Split), Klapa Fa Linđo (Dubrovnik), Klapa Braciera (Brač), Klapa Neverin (Kaštel Lukšić), Klapa PuleNA (Korčula). (click to view large festival poster)
The tradition of Klapa singing evolved since 19th century in Dalmatia as well as in Korcula. It’s main characteristic is harmonic multi tonal homophone singing, mostly love songs and stories about life of fishermen and sailors. The name ‘klapa’ probably evolved from some version of regional Italian language, where word ‘clapa’ means group of friends.
Bellow is (at the moment) my favorite klapa song (‘Probudi me Jutrom’ aka ‘Wake me in the morning’) that is available on YouTube. The song is performed by Klapa Kumpanji from Blato. Enjoy!
