Badija - Monastery and Church
Badija - East of Korcula Old Town there is a group of small islands called SKOJI, among which is Badija - the location of Franciscan church and monastery , built in 14th and 15th century in Gothic and Renaissance style. The cloister itself (see picture above) is completed in 1477. The cloister of Badija's Franciscan monastery is dating back from 15th century as well as the porch around it that is supported by five arcades on the longer sides and four on the shorter ones. The arches of Gothic triforas rise up elegantly from their slender columns. The cloister leads into a church that was built in the Gothic-Renaissance style with a portal decorated with rich rosette. The interior of the church ends with an apses. A Renaissance choir is situated along its walls. Among the artistic and religious valuables are 16th century painting of the "Our Lady of Ascension" in the Venetian manner, and an English Gothic bas-relief in alabaster originally from Nottingham. The monastery was closed in 1950, and the rich library and valuable works of art were transferred to the churches and monasteries of Korcula, Orebic and Dubrovnik. The monastery was recently given back to Franciscans, who are currently restoring it's previous glory. The traditional procession of the Assisi pardon "Perdun" which was a special characteristic of Badija, was reinstated in 1991. Badija is worth visiting as it is easy reached by local taxi-boats.
